stream Are stirring like sweet maidens when they dream。

A caste´mark on the azure brows of Heaven察The golden moon burns

sacred察 solemn察 bright The winds are dancing in the forest´temple察And

swooning at the holy feet of Night。 Hush in the silence mystic voices sing

And make the gods their incense´offering。

                               IN THE FOREST

Here察O my heart察let us burn the dear dreams that are dead察Here in

this wood let us fashion a funeral pyre Of fallen white petals and leaves

that are mellow and red察Here let us burn them in noon's flaming torches

of fire。

We are weary察 my heart察 we are weary察 so long we have borne The

heavy loved burden of dreams that are dead察let us rest察Let us scatter their

ashes away察 for a while let us mourn察We will rest察 O my heart察 till the

shadows are gray in the west。

But soon we must rise察O my heart察we must wander again Into the war

of the world and the strife of the throng察Let us rise察O my heart察let us

gather the dreams that remain察We will conquer the sorrow of life with the

sorrow of song。

                             PAST AND FUTURE

THE NEW HATH COME AND NOW THE OLD RETIRES此And so

the past becomes a mountain´cell察Where lone察apart察old hermit´memories

dwell In consecrated calm察forgotten yet Of the keen heart that hastens to

forget Old longings in fulfilling new desires。

And now the Soul stands in a vague察intense Expectancy and anguish

of suspense察On the dim chamber´threshold 。 。 。 lo he sees Like a strange察

fated bride as yet unknown察 His timid future shrinking there alone察

Beneath her marriage´veil of mysteries。

                                           LIFE

Children察ye have not lived察to you it seems Life is a lovely stalactite

of dreams察 Or carnival of careless joys that leap About your hearts like

billows on the deep In flames of amber and of amethyst。

Children察ye have not lived察ye but exist Till some resistless hour shall

rise and move Your hearts to wake and hunger after love察And thirst with

passionate longing for the things That burn your brows with blood´red

sufferings。

Till ye have battled with great grief and fears察And borne the conflict

of dream´shattering years察 Wounded with fierce desire and worn with

strife察Children察ye have not lived此for this is life。

                        THE POET'S LOVE´SONG

In noon´tide hours察 O Love察 secure and strongI need thee not察 mad

dreams are mine to bindThe world to my desire察 and hold the wind A

voiceless captive to my conquering song。I need thee not察I am content with

theseKeep silence in thy soul察beyond the seas

But in the desolate hour of midnight察whenAn ecstasy of starry silence

sleepsOn the still mountains and the soundless deeps察 And my soul

hungers for thy voice察O thenLove察like the magic of wild melodiesLet

thy soul answer mine across the seas。

                           TO THE GOD OF PAIN

Unwilling priestess in thy cruel fane察Long hast thou held me察pitiless

god of Pain察Bound to thy worship by reluctant vows察My tired breast girt

with suffering察 and my brows Anointed with perpetual weariness。 Long

have I borne thy service察 through the stress Of rigorous years察 sad days

and slumberless nights察Performing thine inexorable rites。

For thy dark altars察balm nor milk nor rice察But mine own soul thou'st

ta'en for sacrifice此All the rich honey of my youth's desire察And all the

sweet oils from my crushed life drawn察And all my flower´like dreams and

gem´like fire Of hopes up´leaping like the light of dawn。

I have no more to give察all that was mine Is laid察a wrested tribute察at

thy shrine察 Let me depart察 for my whole soul is wrung察 And all my

cheerless orisons are sung察Let me depart察with faint limbs let me creep To

some dim shade and sink me down to sleep。

THE SONG OF PRINCESS ZEB´UN´NISSA IN PRAISE OF HER

OWN BEAUTY

     From the Persian

When from my cheek I lift my veil察 The roses turn with envy pale察

And from their pierced hearts察rich with pain察Send forth their fragrance

like a wail。

Or if perchance one perfumed tress Be lowered to the wind's caress察

The honeyed hyacinths complain察And languish in a sweet distress。

And察 when I pause察 still groves among察 。Such loveliness is mine a

throng Of nightingales awake and strain Their souls into a quivering

song。

                               INDIAN DANCERS

Eyes ravished with rapture察 celestially panting察 what passionate

bosoms aflaming withfire Drink deep of the hush of the hyacinth

heavens that glimmer around them in fountains of light察 O wild and

entrancing the strain of keen music that cleaveth the stars like a wail of

desire察 And beautiful dancers with houri´like faces bewitch the

voluptuous watches of night。

The scents of red roses and sandalwood flutter and die in the maze of

their gem´tangled hair察 And smiles are entwining like magical ser´

pents the poppies of lips that are opiate´ sweet察Their glittering garments

of purple are burn´ ing like tremulous dawns in the quiver´ ing air察And

exquisite察 subtle and slow are the tinkle and tread of their rhythmical察

slumber´ soft feet。

Now silent察now singing and swaying and swing´ ing察like blossoms

that bend to the breezes or showers察Now wantonly winding察they flash察

now they falter察and察lingering察languish in radiant choir察Their jewel´

girt arms and warm察 wavering察 lily´ long fingers enchant through

                             MY DEAD DREAM

Have you found me察at last察O my Dream拭 Seven aeons ago You died

and I buried you deep under forests of snow。 Why have you come hither拭

Who bade you awake from your sleep And track me beyond the cerulean

foam of the deep拭

Would you tear from my lintels these sacred green garlands of leaves拭

Would you scare the white察nested察wild pigeons of joy from my eaves拭

Would you touch and defile with dead fingers the robes of my priest拭

Would you weave your dim moan with the chantings of love at my

feast拭

Go back to your grave察O my Dream察under forests of snow察Where a

heart´riven child hid you once察 seven aeons ago。 Who bade you arise

from your darkness拭 I bid you depart Profane not the shrines I have

raised in the clefts of my heart。
