of Sandy Bar察 before breakfast察 on the left bank of the Stanislaus。 He

toiled up through the chimisal that clothed the southern slope of the hill

until he reached the bald察 storm´scarred cap of the mountain察 ironically

decked with the picked察 featherless plumes of a few dying pines。 One察

stripped of all but two lateral branches察 brought a boyish recollection to

his fevered brain。 Against a background of dull sunset fire察it extended

two gaunt armsblack察rigid察and pathetic。              Calvary

     With the very word upon his lips察he threw himself察face downwards察

on the ground beneath it察 and察 with his fingers clutched in the soil察 lay

there for some moments察silent and still。 In this attitude察albeit a skeptic

and unorthodox man察he prayed。 I cannot sayindeed I DARE not say

that his prayer was heard察 or that God visited him thus。 Let us rather

hope that all there was of God in him察in this crucial moment of agony and

shame察 strove outward and upward。 Howbeit察 when the moon rose he

rose too察perhaps a trifle less steady than the planet察and began to descend

the hill with feverish haste察 yet with this marked difference between his

present haste and his former recklessness察that it seemed to have a well´

defined purpose。 When he reached the road again察he struck into a well´

worn trail察where察in the distance察a light faintly twinkled。 Following this

beacon察he kept on察and at last flung himself heavily against the door of

the little cabin from whose window the light had shone。 As he did so察it

opened upon the figure of a square察thickset man察who察in the impetuosity

of Catron's onset察received him察literally察in his arms。

     ;Captain Dick察─said Roger Catron察hoarsely察 Captain Dick察save me

For God's sake察save me ─

     Captain Dick察 without a word察 placed a large察 protecting hand upon

Catron's shoulder察allowed it to slip to his waist察and then drew his visitor

quietly察but firmly察within the cabin。 Yet察in the very movement察he had

managed to gently and unobtrusively possess himself of Catron's pistol。

     ;Save ye From which拭─ asked Captain Dick察 as quietly and

unobtrusively dropping the Derringer in a flour sack。

     ;From everything察─ gasped Catron察 from the men that are hounding

me察 from my family察 from my friends察 but most of allfrom察 from

myself ─

     He had察 in turn察 grasped Captain Dick察 and forced him frenziedly

against the wall。 The captain released himself察and察taking the hands of

his excited visitor察said slowly察

     ;Ye wan some blue masssuthin' to unload your liver。 I'll get it up

for ye。;

     ;But察Captain Dick察I'm an outcast察shamed察disgraced;

     ;Two on them pills taken now察and two in the morning察─continued the

captain察gravely察rolling a bolus in his fingers察 will bring yer head to the

wind again。      Yer fallin' to leeward all the time察and ye want to brace up。;

                                               56

´ Page 57´

     ;But察 Captain察─ continued the agonized man察 again clutching the

sinewy arms of his host察and forcing his livid face and fixed eyes within a

few inches of Captain Dick's察 hear me You must and shall hear me。

I've been in jaildo you hearin jail察 like a common felon。 I've been

sent to the asylum察like a demented pauper。               I've;

     ;Two now察 and two in the morning察─ continued the captain察 quietly

releasing one hand only to place two enormous pills in the mouth of the

excited Catron察 thar nowa drink o' whiskythar察that'll do just enough

to take the taste out of yer mouth察wash it down察and belay it察so to speak。

And how are the mills running察gin'rally察over at the Bar拭─

     ;Captain Dick察hear meif you ARE my friend察for God's sake hear me

An hour ago I should have been a dead man;

     ;They say that Sam Bolin hez sold out of the Excelsior;

     ;Captain Dick        Listen察for God's sake察I have suffered;

     But Captain Dick was engaged in critically examining his man。 ;I

guess I'll ladle ye out some o' that soothin' mixture I bought down at

Simpson's t' other day察─he said察reflectively。             ;And I onderstand the boys

up on the Bar think the rains will set in airly。;

     But here Nature was omnipotent。 Worn by exhaustion察 excitement察

and fever察 and possibly a little affected by Captain Dick's later potion察

Roger Catron turned white察 and lapsed against the wall。 In an instant

Captain Dick had caught him察as a child察lifted him in his stalwart arms察

wrapped a blanket around him察and deposited him in his bunk。 Yet察even

in his prostration察 Catron made one more despairing appeal for mental

sympathy from his host。

     ;I know I'm sickdying察perhaps察─he gasped察from under the blankets察

;but promise me察whatever comes察tell my wifesay to;

     ;It has been lookin' consid'ble like rain察lately察hereabouts察─continued

the captain察 coolly察 in a kind of amphibious slang察 characteristic of the

man察 but in these yer latitudes no man kin set up to be a weather sharp。;

     ;Captain will you hear me拭─

     ;Yer goin' to sleep察now察─said the captain察potentially。

     ;But察Captain察they are pursuing me If they should track me here拭─

     ;Thar is a rifle over thar察 and yer's my navy revolver。 When I've

emptied them察and want you to bear a hand察I'll call ye。 Just now your

lay is to turn in。     It's my watch。;

     There was something so positive察 strong察 assuring察 and a little

awesome in the captain's manner察that the trembling察nervously´ prostrated

man beneath the blankets forbore to question further。 In a few moments

his breathing察albeit hurried and irregular察announced that he slept。 The

captain then arose察 for a moment critically examined the sleeping man察

holding his head a little on one side察 whistling softly察 and stepping

backwards to get a good perspective察but always with contemplative good

humor察as if Catron were a work of art察which he the captain had created察

yet one that he was not yet entirely satisfied with。 Then he put a large

pea´jacket over his flannel blouse察 dragged a Mexican serape from the

corner察and putting it over his shoulders察opened the cabin door察sat down

on the doorstep察 and leaning back against the door´ post察 composed

himself to meditation。 The moon lifted herself slowly over the crest of

Deadwood Hill察 and looked down察 not unkindly察 on his broad察 white察

shaven face察 round and smooth as her own disc察 encircled with a thin

fringe of white hair and whiskers。 Indeed察he looked so like the prevailing

caricatures in a comic almanac of planets察 with dimly outlined features察

that the moon would have been quite justified in flirting with him察as she

clearly did察 insinuating a twinkle into his keen察 gray eyes察 making the

shadow of a dimple on his broad察fat chin察and otherwise idealizing him

after the fashion of her hero´worshiping sex。 Touched by these benign

influences察Captain Dick presently broke forth in melody。 His song was

various察but chiefly察I think察confined to the recital of the exploits of one

;Lorenzo察─who察as related by himself察

             ;Shipped on board of a Liner察 'Renzo察boys察

Renzo察─

       a fact that seemed to have deprived him at once of all metre察

grammar察or even the power of coherent narration。 At times a groan or a

half´articulate cry would come from the ;bunk; whereon Roger Catron lay察

a circumstance that always seemed to excite Captain Dick to greater effort

and more rapid vocalization。 Toward morning察 in the midst of a
