play察without any garden察or pigs察or things拭─

     ;When I want to play察─he said察gravely察 I have to go and play in the

street察but it's poor fun察I grant you。 There's a goat察though察not far off察

and sometimes I talk to him when I'm feeling lonely察but he's very proud。;

     ;Goats ARE proud察─ I admitted。 ;There's one lives near here察and if

you say anything to him at all察he hits you in the wind with his head。 You

know what it feels like when a fellow hits you in the wind拭─

     ;I do察well察─he replied察in a tone of proper melancholy察and painted on。

     ;And have you been to any other places察─ I began again察 presently察

;besides Rome and Piccy´what's´his´name拭─

     ;Heaps察─ he said。 ;I'm a sort of Ulyssesseen men and cities察 you

know。 In fact察 about the only place I never got to was the Fortunate

Island。;

     I began to like this man。 He answered your questions briefly and to

the point察and never tried to be funny。 I felt I could be confidential with

him。

     ;Wouldn't you like察─I inquired察 to find a city without any people in it

at all拭─

     He looked puzzled。         ;I'm afraid I don't quite understand察─said he。

     ;I mean察─I went on eagerly察 a city where you walk in at the gates察and

the shops are all full of beautiful things察and the houses furnished as grand

as can be察and there isn't anybody there whatever And you go into the

shops察 and take anything you wantchocolates and magic lanterns and

injirubber ballsand there's nothing to pay察 and you choose your own

house and live there and do just as you like察and never go to bed unless

you want to ─

     The artist laid down his brush。 ;That WOULD be a nice city察─ he

said。 ;Better than Rome。 You can't do that sort of thing in Romeor in

Piccadilly either。       But I fear it's one of the places I've never been to。;

     ;And you'd ask your friends察─ I went on察 warming to my subject察

;only those you really like察 of courseand they'd each have a house to

themselvesthere'd be lots of housesand no relations at all察unless they

promised they'd be pleasant察and if they weren't they'd have to go。;

     ;So you wouldn't have any relations拭─said the artist。 ;Well察perhaps

you're right。      We have tastes in common察I see。;

     ;I'd have Harold察─I said察reflectively察 and Charlotte。                  They'd like it

awfully。 The others are getting too old。 Oh察 and MarthaI'd have

Martha察to cook and wash up and do things。 You'd like Martha。 She's

ever so much nicer than Aunt Eliza。              She's my idea of a real lady。;

     ;Then I'm sure I should like her察─ he replied察 heartily察 and when I

come towhat do you call this city of yours拭 Nephelo something察 did

you say拭─

     ;II don't know察─I replied察timidly。            ;I'm afraid it hasn't got a name

yet。;

     The artist gazed out over the downs。 ;`The poet says察 dear city of

Cecrops'; he said察softly察to himself察 ─and wilt not thou say察dear city of

Zeus' That's from Marcus Aurelius察─he went on察 turning again to his

work。      ;You don't know him察I suppose察you will some day。;

     ;Who's he拭─I inquired。

     ;Oh察 just another fellow who lived in Rome察─ he replied察 dabbing

away。

     ;O dear ─I cried察disconsolately。 ;What a lot of people seem to live

at Rome察 and I've never even been there But I think I'd like MY city

best。;

     ;And so would I察─ he replied with unction。 ;But Marcus Aurelius

wouldn't察you know。;

     ;Then   we   won't   invite   him察─  I   said察   will   we拭─      _I_   won't   if   you

                                                  68

won't察─said he。 And that point being settled察we were silent for a while。

     ;Do you know察─he said察presently察 I've met one or two fellows from

time to time who have been to a city like yoursperhaps it was the same

one。 They won't talk much about itonly broken hints察 now and then察

but they've been there sure enough。 They don't seem to care about

anything in particularand every thing's the same to them察 rough or

smooth察and sooner or later they slip off and disappear察and you never see

them again。       Gone back察I suppose。;

     ;Of course察─ said I。 ;Don't see what they ever came away for察 _I_

wouldn'tto be told you've broken things when you haven't察and stopped

having tea with the servants in the kitchen察and not allowed to have a dog

to sleep with you。       But _I've_ known people察too察who've gone there。;

     The artist stared察but without incivility。

     ;Well察 there's Lancelot察─ I went on。 ;The book says he died察 but it

never seemed to read right察 somehow。 He just went away察 like Arthur。

And Crusoe察when he got tired of wearing clothes and being respectable。

And all the nice men in the stones who don't marry the Princess察'cos only

one man ever gets married in a book察you know。 They'll be there ─

     ;And the men who never come off察─he said察 who try like the rest察but

get knocked out察or somehow missor break down or get bowled over in

the meleeand get no Princess察nor even a second´class kingdomsome

of them'll be there察I hope拭─

     ;Yes察 if you like察─ I replied察 not quite understanding him察 if they're

friends of yours察we'll ask 'em察of course。;

     ;What a time we shall have ─ said the artist察 reflectively察 and how

shocked old Marcus Aurelius will be ─

     The shadows had lengthened uncannily察 a tide of golden haze was

flooding the grey´green surface of the downs察and the artist began to put

his traps together察preparatory to a move。 I felt very low察we would have

to part察it seemed察just as we were getting on so well together。 Then he

stood up察and he was very straight and tall察and the sunset was in his hair

and beard as he stood there察 high over me。 He took my hand like an

equal。 ;I've enjoyed our conversation very much察─he said。 ;That was

an interesting subject you started察and we haven't half exhausted it。 We

shall meet again察I hope。;

     ;Of course we shall察─ I replied察 surprised that there should be any

doubt about it。

     ;In Rome察perhaps拭─said he。

     ;Yes察in Rome察─I answered察 or Piccy´the´other´place察or somewhere。;

;Or else察─ said he察 in that other citywhen we've found the way there。

And I'll look out for you察and you'll sing out as soon as you see me。 And

we'll go down the street arm´in´arm察and into all the shops察and then I'll

choose my house察and you'll choose your house察and we'll live there like

princes and good fellows。;

     ;Oh察but you'll stay in my house察won't you拭─I cried察 wouldn't ask

everybody察but I'll ask YOU。;

     He affected to consider a moment察then ;Right ─he said此 I believe

you mean it察and I WILL come and stay with you。 I won't go to anybody

else察if they ask me ever so much。 And I'll stay quite a long time察too察

and I won't be any trouble。;

     Upon this compact we parted察 and I went down´heartedly from the

man who understood me察 back to the house where I never could do

anything right。 How was it that everything seemed natural and sensible

to him察which these uncles察vicars察and other grown´up men took for the

merest tomfoolery拭 Well察he would explain this察and many another thing察

when we met again。 The Knights' Road How it always brought

consolation Was he possibly one of those vanished knights I had been

looking for so long拭 Perhaps he would be in armour next timewhy not拭

He would look well in armour察I thought。 And I would take care to get

there first察and see the sunlight flash and play on his helmet
