the   morning。      Poplars   swayed       and   tossed   with   a  roaring   swish察   dead 

leaves sprang aloft察and whirled into space察and all the clear´swept heaven 

seemed to thrill with sound like a great harp。 

     It   was   one   of the   first   awakenings of   the   year。  The   earth   stretched 

herself察smiling in her sleep察and everything leapt and pulsed to the stir of 

the   giant's   movement。      With   us   it   was   a   whole   holiday察  the   occasion   a 

birthdayit   matters   not   whose。      Some   one   of   us   had   had   presents察  and 

pretty conventional speeches察and had glowed with that sense of heroism 

which is no less sweet that nothing has been done to deserve it。                    But the 

holiday was   for all察the rapture  of   awakening Nature  for all察 the various 

outdoor joys of puddles and sun and hedge´breaking for all。                     Colt´like I 

ran   through     the  meadows察  frisking      happy   heels    in   the  face   of  Nature 

laughing responsive。         Above察the sky was bluest of the blue察wide pools 

left by the winter's floods flashed the colour back察true and brilliant察and 

the   soft   air   thrilled  with   the   germinating   touch    that   seemed    to  kindle 

something in my own small person as well as in the rash primrose already 

lurking in sheltered haunts。          Out into the brimming sun´ bathed world I 

sped察free of lessons察free of discipline and correction察for one day at least。 

My legs ran of themselves察and though I heard my name called faint and 

shrill   behind察   there   was   no   stopping     for  me。    It  was    only   Harold察   I 

concluded察and his legs察though shorter than mine察were good for a longer 

spurt than this。      Then I heard it called again察but this time more faintly察

with   a   pathetic   break   in   the   middle察  and   I   pulled   up   short察  recognising 

Charlotte's plaintive note。 

     She panted up anon察and dropped on the turf beside me。                   Neither had 

any   desire   for   talk察  the   glow   and   the   glory   of   existing   on   this   perfect 

morning were satisfaction full and sufficient。 

     ;Where's Harold察─I asked presently。 

     ;Oh察    he's  just  playin'   muffin´man察      as  usual察─  said   Charlotte    with 

petulance。      ;Fancy wanting to be a muffin´man on a whole holiday ─

     It   was   a   strange   craze察  certainly察  but   Harold察  who   invented   his   own 

games   and   played   them   without   assistance察  always   stuck   staunchly   to   a 

new fad察till he had worn it quite out。             Just at present he was a muffin´ 

man察  and   day   and   night   he     went   through   passages   and   up   and      down 

staircases察    ringing    a  noiseless    bell   and   offering    phantom      muffins    to 

invisible wayfarers。        It sounds a poor sort of sport察and yetto pass along 

busy streets of your own building察for ever ringing an imaginary bell and 

offering airy muffins of your own make to a bustling thronging crowd of 

your own creationthere were points about the game察it cannot be denied察

though      it  seemed     scarce    in   harmony      with    this  radiant    wind´swept 

morning 

     ;And Edward察where is he拭─I questioned again。 

     ;He's coming along by the road察─said Charlotte。                ;He'll be crouching 

in   the   ditch   when   we   get   there察  and   he's   going   to   be   a   grizzly  bear   and 

spring out on us察only you mustn't say I told you察'cos it's to be a surprise。; 

     ;All right察─I said magnanimously。             ;Come on and let's be surprised。; 

But   I   could   not   help   feeling that on   this   day  of   days   even   a grizzly  felt 

misplaced and common。 

     Sure enough an undeniable bear sprang out on us as we dropped into 

the road察then   ensued shrieks察growlings察 revolver´shots察and unrecorded 

heroisms察  till   Edward   condescended   at   last   to   roll   over   and   die察  bulking 

large and grim察an unmitigated grizzly。              It was an understood thing察that 

whoever   took   upon   himself   to   be   a   bear   must   eventually   die察  sooner   or 

later察even if he were the eldest born察else察life would have been all strife 

and     carnage察   and    the  Age     of  Acorns     have    displaced     our   hard´won 

civilisation。     This   little   affair   concluded   with   satisfaction   to   all   parties 

concerned察we rambled along the road察picking up the defaulting Harold 

by the way察muffinless now and in his right and social mind。 

     ;What   would   you   do拭─  asked   Charlotte   presentlythe   book   of   the 

moment always dominating her thoughts until it was sucked dry and cast 

aside察what would you do if you saw two lions in the road察one on each 

side察and you didn't know if they was loose or if they was chained up拭─

     ;Do拭─shouted Edward察valiantly察 I shouldI shouldI should; 

     His    boastful    accents    died   away    into   a  mumble此      Dunno       what    I

should do。; 

     ;Shouldn't do   anything察─  I   observed   after   consideration察  and   really  it 

would be difficult to arrive at a wiser conclusion。 

     ;If it came to DOING察─remarked Harold察reflectively察 the lions would 

do all the doing there was to do察wouldn't they拭─

     ;But if they was GOOD lions察─rejoined Charlotte察 they would do as 

they would be done by。; 

     ;Ah察  but   how   are   you   to   know   a   good   lion   from   a   bad   one拭─  said 

Edward。      ;The books don't tell you at all察and the lions ain't marked any 

different。; 

     ;Why察there aren't any good lions察─said Harold察hastily。 

     ;Oh yes察there are察heaps and heaps察─contradicted Edward。                   ;Nearly 

all the lions in the story´books are good lions。           There was Androcles' lion察

and St。 Jerome's lion察andandthe Lion and the Unicorn; 

     ;He   beat   the   Unicorn察─  observed   Harold察  dubiously察   all   round   the 

town。; 

     ;That   PROVES   he   was   a   good   lion察─  cried   Edwards   triumphantly。 

;But the question is察how are you to tell 'em when you see 'em拭─

     ;_I_ should ask Martha察─said Harold of the simple creed。 

     Edward      snorted    contemptuously察     then   turned    to  Charlotte。    ;Look 

here察─he said察 let's play at lions察anyhow察and I'll run on to that corner 

and be a lionI'll be two lions察one on each side of the roadand you'll 

come along察and you won't know whether I'm chained up or not察and that'll 

be the fun ─

     ;No察thank you察─said Charlotte察firmly察 you'll be chained up till I'm 

quite close to you察and then you'll be loose察and you'll tear me in pieces察

and make my frock all dirty察and p'raps you'll hurt me as well。                 _I_ know 

your lions ─

     ;No察I won't察I swear I won't察─protested Edward。              ;I'll be quite a new 

lion this timesomething you can't even imagine。;                And he raced off to 

his   post。   Charlotte     hesitated察  then   she   went   timidly   on察  at   each  step 

growing less   Charlotte察the   mummer  of   a   minute察  and   more   the   anxious 

Pilgrim of all time。       The lion's wrath waxed terrible at her approach察his 

roaring   filled   the   startled   air。 I   waited   until   they  were   both   thoroughly

absorbed察and then I slipped through the hedge out of the trodden highway察

into the vacant meadow spaces。             It was not that I was unsociable察nor that 

I knew Edward's lions to the point of satiety察but the passion and the call 

of the divine morning were high in my blood。 

     Earth to earth       That was the frank note察the joyous summons of the 

day察    and   they    could    not   but   jar  and    seem    artificial察  these   human 

discussions      and   pretences察    when    boon    Nature察   reticent   no   more察   was 

singing   that   full´throated   song   of   hers   that   thrills   and   claims   control   of 

every   fibre。     The   air   was   wine察  the   moist   earth´smell察  wine察  the   lark's 

song察the wafts from the cow´shed at top of the field察the pant and smoke 

of a distant trainall were wineor song察was it拭or odour察this unity they 

all blended into拭      I had no words then to describe it察that earth´ effluence 

of which I was so conscious察nor察indeed察have I found words since。                     I ran 

sideways察shouting察  I dug glad heels into   the  squelching soil察  I  splashed
