myself察 scarce conscious of intermediate steps察 seated actually in the

circus at last察 and took in the first sniff of that intoxicating circus smell

that will stay by me while this clay endures。 The place was beset by a

hum and a glitter and a mist察 suspense brooded large o'er the blank察

mysterious arena。 Strung up to the highest pitch of expectation察we knew

not from what quarter察in what divine shape察the first surprise would come。

A thud of unseen hoofs first set us aquiver察then a crash of cymbals察a

jangle of bells察a hoarse applauding roar察and Coralie was in the midst of

us察 whirling past 'twixt earth and sky察 now erect察 flushed察 radiant察 now

crouched to the flowing mane察 swung and tossed and moulded by the

maddening dance´music of the band。 The mighty whip of the count in

the frock´coat marked time with pistol´shots察his war´cry察whooping clear

above the music察 fired the blood with a passion for splendid deeds察 as

Coralie察 laughing察 exultant察 crashed through the paper hoops。 We

gripped the red cloth in front of us察and our souls sped round and round

with Coralie察leaping with her察prone with her察swung by mane or tail with

her。 It was not only the ravishment of her delirious feats察nor her cream

coloured horse of fairy breed察long´tailed察roe´footed察an enchanted prince

surely察 if ever there was one It was her more than mortal beauty

displayed察too察under conditions never vouchsafed to us beforethat held

us spell´bound。 What princess had arms so dazzlingly white察 or went

delicately clothed in such pink and spangles拭 Hitherto we had known the

outward woman as but a drab thing察 hour´glass shaped察 nearly legless察

bunched here察 constricted there察 slow of movement察 and given to

deprecating lusty action of limb。 Here was a revelation From

henceforth our imaginations would have to be revised and corrected up to

date。 In one of those swift rushes the mind makes in high´strung

moments察 I saw myself and Coralie察 close enfolded察 pacing the world

together察o'er hill and plain察through storied cities察past rows of applauding

relationsI in my Sunday knickerbockers察she in her pink and spangles。

Summers sicken察 flowers fail and die察 all beauty but rides round the

ring and out at the portal察 even so Coralie passed in her turn察 poised

sideways察panting察on her steed察lightly swayed as a tulip´bloom察bowing

on this side and on that as she disappeared察and with her went my heart

and my soul察and all the light and the glory and the entrancement of the

scene。

Harold woke up with a gasp。 ;Wasn't she beautiful拭─he said察in quite

a subdued way for him。 I felt a momentary pang。 We had been friendly

rivals before察in many an exploit察but here was altogether a more serious

affair。 Was this察then察to be the beginning of strife and coldness察of civil

war on the hearthstone and the sundering of old ties拭 Then I recollected

the true position of things察 and felt very sorry for Harold察 for it was

inexorably written that he would have to give way to me察since I was the

elder。 Rules were not made for nothing察 in a sensibly constructed

universe。

There was little more to wait for察now Coralie had gone察yet I lingered

still察 on the chance of her appearing again。 Next moment the clown

tripped up and fell flat察 with magnificent artifice察 and at once fresh

emotions began to stir。 Love had endured its little hour察 and stern

ambition now asserted itself。 Oh察to be a splendid fellow like this察self´

contained察ready of speech察agile beyond conception察braving the forces of

society察 his hand against everyone察 yet always getting the best of it

What freshness of humour察 what courtesy to dames察 what triumphant

ability to discomfit rivals察frock´coated and moustached though they might

be And what a grand察self´ confident straddle of the legs Who could

desire a finer career than to go through life thus gorgeously equipped

Success was his key´note察adroitness his panoply察and the mellow music of

laughter his instant reward。 Even Coralie's image wavered and receded。

I would come back to her in the evening察 of course察 but I would be a

clown all the working hours of the day。

The short interval was ended此 the band察 with long´drawn chords察

sounded a prelude touched with significance察 and the programme察 in

letters overtopping their fellows察proclaimed Zephyrine察the Bride of the

Desert察in her unequalled bareback equestrian interlude。 So sated was I

already with beauty and with wit察 that I hardly dared hope for a fresh

emotion。 Yet her title was tinged with romance察and Coralie's display had

aroused in me an interest in her sex which even herself had failed to

satisfy entirely。

Brayed in by trumpets察Zephyrine swung passionately into the arena。

With a bound she stood erect察one foot upon each of her supple察plunging

Arabs察and at once I knew that my fate was sealed察my chapter closed察and

the Bride of the Desert was the one bride for me。 Black was her raiment察

great silver stars shone through it察 caught in the dusky twilight of her

gauze察black as her own hair were the two mighty steeds she bestrode。 In

a tempest they thundered by察in a whirlwind察a scirocco of tan察her cheeks

bore the kiss of an Eastern sun察and the sand´ storms of her native desert

were her satellites。 What was Coralie察with her pink silk察her golden hair

and slender limbs察beside this magnificent察full´figured Cleopatra拭 In a

twinkling we were scouring the desertshe and I and the two coal´ black

horses。 Side by side察keeping pace in our swinging gallop察we distanced

the ostrich察 we outstrode the zebra察 and察 as we went察 it seemed the

wilderness blossomed like the rose。

       。 。 。 。 。 。 。

I know not rightly how we got home that evening。 On the road there

were everywhere strange presences察 and the thud of phantom hoofs

encircled us。 In my nose was the pungent circus´smell察the crack of the

whip and the frank laugh of the clown were in my ears。 The funny man

thoughtfully abstained from conversation察and left our illusion quite alone察

sparing us all jarring criticism and analysis察and he gave me no chance察

when he deposited us at our gate察to get rid of the clumsy expressions of

gratitude I had been laboriously framing。 For the rest of the evening察

distraught and silent察I only heard the march´music of the band察playing on

in some corner of my brain。 When at last my head touched the pillow察in

a trice I was with Zephyrine察riding the boundless Sahara察cheek to cheek察

the world well lost察while at times察through the sand´clouds that encircled

us察glimmered the eyes of Coralie察touched察one fancied察with something

of a tender reproach。

                                 JASPER

In the long winter evenings察when we had the picture´books out on the

floor察and sprawled together over them with elbows deep in the hearth´rug察

the first business to be gone through was the process of allotment。 All

the characters in the pictures had to be assigned and dealt out among us察

according to seniority察as far as they would go。 When once that had been

satisfactorily completed察the story was allowed to proceed察and thereafter察

in addition to the excitement of the plot察one alway
