labors under difficulty of breathing察if it is the summer season
and if he is in the prime of life察and is strong察blood should be
abstracted from the arm察and then he should eat hot pieces of bread
dipped in dark wine and oil察drink very little察and labor much察and
live on well´fed pork察boiled with vinegar察so that he may be able
to endure hard exercises。
21。 Those who have the inferior intestines hot察and who pass acrid
and irregular stools of a colliquative nature察if they can bear it
should procure revulsion by vomiting with hellebore察but if not
should get a thick decoction of summer wheat in a cold state察lentil
soup察bread cooked with cinders察and fish察which should be taken
boiled if they have fever察but roasted if not feverish察and also
dark´colored wine if free of fever察but otherwise they should take the
water from medlars察myrtles察apples察services察dates察or wild vine。 If
there be no fever察and if there be tormina察the patient should drink
hot asses' milk in small quantity at first察and gradually increase it
and linseed察and wheaten flour察and having removed the bitter part
of Egyptian beans察and ground them察sprinkle on the milk and drink
and let him eat eggs half´roasted察and fine flour察and millet察and
perl´spelt chondrus boiled in milk察 all these things should be
eaten cold察and similar articles of food and drink should be
administered。
22。 The most important point of regimen to observe and be guarded
about in protracted diseases察is to pay attention to the exacerbations
and remissions of fevers察so as to avoid the times when food should
not be given察and to know when it may be administered without
danger察this last season is at the greatest possible distance from the
exacerbation。
23。 One should be able to recognize those who have headache from
gymnastic exercises察or running察or walking or hunting察or any other
unseasonable labor察or from immoderate venery察also those who are of a
pale color察or troubled with hoarseness察those who have enlarged
spleen察those who are in a state of anaemia察those who are suffering
from tympanites察those having dry cough and thirst察those who are
flatulent察and have the course of the blood in their veins
intercepted察those persons whose hypochondria察sides察and back are
distended此those having torpor察those laboring under amaurosis察or
having noises in their ears察those suffering from incontinence of
urine or jaundice察or whose food is passed undigested察those who
have discharges of blood from the nose or anus察or who have flatulence
and intense pain察and who cannot retain the wind。 In these cases you
may do mischief察but cannot possibly do any good by purging察but may
interrupt the spontaneous remissions and crises of the complaints。
24。 If you think it expedient to let blood察see that the bowels be
previously settled察and then bleed察enjoin abstinence察and forbid
the use of wine察and complete the cure by means of a suitable regimen
and wet fomentations。 But if the bowels appear to be constipated
administer a soothing clyster。
25。 If you think it necessary to give medicines察you may safely
purge upwards by hellebore察but none of those should be purged
downwards。 The most effectual mode of treatment is by the urine
sweats察and exercise察and use gentle friction so as not to harden
the constitution察and if he be confined to bed let others rub him。
When the pain is seated above the diaphragm察place him erect for the
most part察and let him be as little reclined as possible察and when
he is raised up let him be rubbed for a considerable time with
plenty of hot oil。 But if the pains be in the lower belly below the
diaphragm察it will be useful to lie reclined and make no motion察and
to such a person nothing should be administered except the friction。
Those pains which are dissolved by discharges from the bowels察by
urine察or moderate sweats察cease spontaneously察if they are slight
but if strong they prove troublesome察for persons so affected either
die察or at least do not recover without further mischief察for they
terminate in abscesses。
26。 A draught for a dropsical person。 Take three cantharides察and
removing their head察feet察and wings察triturate their bodies in
three cupfuls cyathi of water察and when the person who has drunk the
draught complains of pain察let him have hot fomentations applied。
The patient should be first anointed with oil察should take the draught
fasting察and eat hot bread with oil。
27。 A styptic。 Apply the juice of the fig inwardly to the vein察or
having moulded biestings into a tent察introduce up the nostril察or
push up some chalcitis with the finger察and press the cartilages of
the nostrils together察and open the bowels with the boiled milk of
asses此or having shaved the head apply cold things to it if in the
summer season。
28。 The sesamoides purges upwards when pounded in oxymel to the
amount of a drachm and a half察and drunk察it is combined with the
hellebores察to the amount of the third part察and thus it is less apt
to produce suffocation。
29。 Trichiasis。 Having introduced a thread into the eye of a
needle push it through the upper part of the distended eyelid察and
do the same at the base of it察having stretched the threads tie a knot
on them察and bind up until they drop out此and察if this be
sufficient察so far well察but if otherwise察you must do the same
thing again。 And hemorrhoids察in like manner察you may treat by
transfixing them with a needle and tying them with a very thick and
large woolen thread察for thus the cure will be more certain。 When
you have secured them察use a septic application察and do not foment
until they drop off察and always leave one behind察and when the patient
recovers察let him be put upon a course of hellebore。 Then let him be
exercised and sweated察the friction of the gymnasium and wrestling
in the morning will be proper察but he must abstain from running
drinking察and all acrid substances察except marjoram察let him take an
emetic every seven days察or three times in a month察for thus will he
enjoy the best bodily health。 Let him take straw´colored察austere察and
watery wine察and use little drink。
30。 For persons affected with empyema。 Having cut some bulbs or
squill察boil in water察and when well boiled察throw this away察and
having poured in more water察boil until it appear to the touch soft
and well´boiled察then triturate finely and mix roasted cumin察and
white sesames察and young almonds pounded in honey察form into an
electuary and give察and afterwards sweet wine。 In draughts察having
pounded about a small acetabulum of the white poppy察moisten it with
water in which summer wheat has been washed察add honey察and boil。
Let him take this frequently during the day。 And then taking into
account what is to happen察give him supper。
31。 For dysentery。 A fourth part of a pound of cleaned beans察and
twelve shoots of madder having been triturated察are to be mixed
together and boiled察and given as a linctus with some fatty substance。
32。 For diseases of the eyes。 Washed spodium tutty殖 mixed with
grease察and not of a thinner consistence than dough察is to be
carefully triturated察and moistened with the juice of unripe
raisins察and having dried in the sun察moisten until it is of the
consistence of an ointment。 When it becomes again dry察let it be
finely levigated察anoint the eyes with it察and dust it upon the angles
of the eyes。
33。 For watery eyes。 Take one drachm of ebeny and nine oboli of
burnt copper察rub them upon a whetstone察add three oboli of saffron
triturate all these things reduced to a fine powder察pour in an
Attic hemina of sweet wine察and then place in the sun and cover up
when sufficiently digested察use it。
34。 For violent pains of the eyes。 Take of chalcitis察and of raisin
of each 1 dr。察when digested for two days察strain察and pounding
myrrh and saffron察and having mixed must察with these things察digest in
the sun察and with this anoint the eyes when in a state of severe pain。
Let it be kept in a copper vessel。
35。 Mode of distinguishing persons in an hysterical fit。 Pinch
them with your fingers察and if they feel察it is hysterical察but if
not察it is a convulsion。
36。 To persons in coma察。dropsy殖 give to drink meconium
euphorbia peplus殖 to the amount of a round Attic leciskion small
acetabulum。
37。 Of squama aeris察as much as three specilla can contain察with the
gluten of summer wheat此levigate察pound察form into pills察and give察it
purges water downwards。
38。 A medicine for opening the bowels。 Pour upon figs the juice of
spurge察in the proportion of seven to one此then put into a new
vessel and lay past when properly mixed。 Give before food。
39。 Pounding meconium察pouring on it water察and straining察and
mixing flour察and baking into a cake察with the addition of boiled
honey察give in affections of the anus and in dropsy察and after
eating of it察let the patient drink of a sweet watery wine察and
diluted hydromel prepared from wax此or collecting meconium察lay it
up for medicinal purposes。
