JUST DAVID
David was left at the Holly farmhouse察though Simeon Holly mentally
declared that he should lose no time in looking about for some one to take
the boy away。
On that first day Higgins察picking up the reins preparatory to driving
from the yard察had said察with a nod of his head toward David此 Well察
how about it察Holly拭Shall we leave him here till we find somebody that
wants him拭─
;Why察 yyes察 I suppose so察─ hesitated Simeon Holly察 with uncordial
accent。
But his wife察hovering in the background察hastened forward at once。
;Oh察yes察yes察indeed察─she urged。 ;I'm sure hehe won't be a mite of
trouble察Simeon。;
;Perhaps not察─ conceded Simeon Holly darkly。 ;Neither察 it is safe to
say察will he be anything elseworth anything。;
;That's it exactly察─spoke up Streeter察from his seat in the wagon。 ;If I
thought he'd be worth his salt察now察I'd take him myself察butwell察look at
him this minute察─he finished察with a disdainful shrug。
David察on the lowest step察was very evidently not hearing a word of
what was being said。 With his sensitive face illumined察 he was again
poring over his father's letter。
Something in the sudden quiet cut through his absorption as the noisy
hum of voices had not been able to do察and he raised his head。 His eyes
were starlike。
;I'm so glad father told me what to do察─ he breathed。 ;It'll be easier
now。;
Receiving no answer from the somewhat awkwardly silent men察 he
went on察as if in explanation此
;You know he's waiting for mein the far country察I mean。 He said he
was。 And when you've got somebody waiting察 you don't mind staying
behind yourself for a little while。 Besides察 I've GOT to stay to find out
about the beautiful world察you know察so I can tell him察when _I_ go。 That's
the way I used to do back home on the mountain察you seetell him about

things。 Lots of days we'd go to walk察then察when we got home察he'd have
me tell him察with my violin察what I'd seen。 And now he says I'm to stay
here。;
;Here ─It was the quick察stern voice of Simeon Holly。
;Yes察─ nodded David earnestly察 to learn about the beautiful world。
Don't you remember拭And he said I was not to want to go back to my
mountains察that I would not need to察anyway察because the mountains察and
the sky察and the birds and squirrels and brooks are really in my violin察you
know。 And; But with an angry frown Simeon Holly stalked away察
motioning Larson to follow him察 and with a merry glance and a low
chuckle Higgins turned his horse about and drove from the yard。 A
moment later David found himself alone with Mrs。 Holly察 who was
looking at him with wistful察though slightly fearful eyes。
;Did you have all the breakfast you wanted拭─ she asked timidly察
resorting察as she had resorted the night before察to the everyday things of
her world in the hope that they might make this strange little boy seem less
wild察and more nearly human。
;Oh察yes察thank you。; David's eyes had strayed back to the note in his
hand。 Suddenly he looked up察a new something in his eyes。 ;What is it to
be aa tramp拭─he asked。 ;Those men said daddy and I were tramps。;
;A tramp拭Oherwhy察just aa tramp察─stammered Mrs。 Holly。 ;But
never mind that察David。 II wouldn't think any more about it。;
;But what is a tramp拭─persisted David察a smouldering fire beginning
to show in his eyes。 ;Because if they meant THIEVES;
;No察 no察 David察─ interrupted Mrs。 Holly soothingly。 ;They never
meant thieves at all。;
;Then察what is it to be a tramp拭─
;Why察it's just toto tramp察─explained Mrs。 Holly desperately察walk
along the road from one town to another察andand not live in a house at
all。;
;Oh ─ David's face cleared。 ;That's all right察 then。 I'd love to be a
tramp察and so'd father。 And we were tramps察sometimes察too察'cause lots of

times察in the summer察we didn't stay in the cabin hardly anyjust lived out
of doors all day and all night。 Why察I never knew really what the pine trees
were saying till I heard them at night察lying under them。 You know what I
mean。 You've heard them察haven't you拭─
;At night拭Pine trees拭─stammered Mrs。 Holly helplessly。
;Yes。 Oh察haven't you ever heard them at night拭─cried the boy察in his
voice a very genuine sympathy as for a grievous loss。 ;Why察 then察 if
you've only heard them daytimes察 you don't know a bit what pine trees
really are。 But I can tell you。 Listen This is what they say察─finished the
boy察 whipping his violin from its case察 and察 after a swift testing of the
strings察plunging into a weird察haunting little melody。
In the doorway察 Mrs。 Holly察 bewildered察 yet bewitched察 stood
motionless察 her eyes half´fearfully察 half´longingly fixed on David's
glorified face。 She was still in the same position when Simeon Holly came
around the corner of the house。
;Well察 Ellen察─ he began察 with quiet scorn察 after a moment's stern
watching of the scene before him察 have you nothing better to do this
morning than to listen to this minstrel fellow拭─
;Oh察 Simeon Why察 yes察 of course。 II forgotwhat I was doing察─
faltered Mrs。 Holly察flushing guiltily from neck to brow as she turned and
hurried into the house。
David察on the porch steps察seemed to have heard nothing。 He was still
playing察his rapt gaze on the distant sky´line察when Simeon Holly turned
upon him with disapproving eyes。
;See here察boy察can't you do anything but fiddle拭─he demanded。 Then察
as David still continued to play察he added sharply此 Did n't you hear me察
boy拭─
The music stopped abruptly。 David looked up with the slightly dazed
air of one who has been summoned as from another world。
;Did you speak to me察sir拭─he asked。
;I didtwice。 I asked if you never did anything but play that fiddle。;
;You mean at home拭─David's face expressed mild wonder without a

trace of anger or resentment。 ;Why察yes察of course。 I couldn't play ALL the
time察you know。 I had to eat and sleep and study my books察and every day
we went to walklike tramps察as you call them察─he elucidated察his face
brightening with obvious delight at being able察for once察to explain matters
in terms that he felt sure would be understood。
;Tramps察 indeed ─ muttered Simeon Holly察 under his breath。 Then察
sharply此 Did you never perform any useful labor察 boy拭Were your days
always spent in this ungodly idleness拭─
Again David frowned in mild wonder。
;Oh察I wasn't idle察sir。 Father said I must never be that。 He said every
instrument was needed in the great Orchestra of Life察and that I was one察
you know察even if I was only a little boy。 And he said if I kept still and
didn't do my part察the harmony wouldn't be complete察and;
;Yes察 yes察 but never mind that now察 boy察─ interrupted Simeon Holly察
with harsh impatience。 ;I mean察did he never set you to workreal work拭─
;Work拭─David meditated again。 Then suddenly his face cleared。 ;Oh察
yes察sir察he said I had a beautiful work to do察and that it was waiting for me
out in the world。 That's why we came down from the mountain察you know察
to find it。 Is that what you mean拭─
;Well察no察─retorted the man察 I can't say that it was。 I was referring to
workreal work about the house。 Did you never do any of that拭─
David gave a relieved laugh。
;Oh察you mean getting the meals and tidying up the house察─he replied。
;Oh察yes察I did that with father察only;his face grew wistful;I'm afraid I
didn't do it very well。 My bacon was never as nice and crisp as father's察
and the fire was always spoiling my potatoes。; ;Humph bacon and
potatoes察indeed ─scorned Simeon Holly。 ;Well察boy察we call that women's
work down here。 We set men to something else。 Do you see that woodpile
by the shed d
