JUST DAVID
It was not until nearly a week later that David had his wish of seeing
his Mr。 Jack and his Lady of the Roses meet at his bedside。 It was the day
Miss Holbrook brought to him the wonderful set of handsomely bound
;Waverley Novels。; He was still glorying in his new possession察in fact察
when Mr。 Jack appeared suddenly in the doorway。
;Hullo my boy察I justOh察I beg your pardon。 I supposed you were
alone察─he stammered察looking very red indeed。
;He isthat is察he will be察soonexcept for you察Mr。 Gurnsey察─smiled
Miss Holbrook察very brightly。 She was already on her feet。
;No察no察I beg of you察─stammered Mr。 Jack察growing still more red。
;Don't let me drivethat is察I mean察don't go察please。 I didn't know。 I had
no warningI didn't seeYour carriage was not at the door to´day。;
Miss Holbrook's eyebrows rose the fraction of an inch。
;I sent it home。 I am planning to walk back。 I have several calls to
make on the way察and it's high time I was starting。 Good´bye察David。;
;But察 Lady察 of the Roses察 please察 please察 don't go察─ besought David察
who had been looking from one to the other in worried dismay。 ;Why察
you've just come ─
But neither coaxing nor argument availed察 and before David really
knew just what had happened察he found himself alone with Mr。 Jack。
Even then disappointment was piled on disappointment察for Mr。 Jack's
visit was not the unalloyed happiness it usually was。 Mr。 Jack himself was
almost cross at first察 and then he was silent and restless察 moving jerkily
about the room in a way that disturbed David very much。
Mr。 Jack had brought with him a book察 but even that only made
matters worse察for when he saw the beautifully bound volumes that Miss
Holbrook had just left察he frowned察and told David that he guessed he did
not need his gift at all察with all those other fine books。 And David could
not seem to make him understand that the one book from him was just
exactly as dear as were the whole set of books that his Lady of the Roses
brought。
Certainly it was not a satisfactory visit at all察 and for the first time

JUST DAVID
David was almost glad to have Mr。 Jack go and leave him with his books。
The BOOKS察David told himself察he could understand察Mr。 Jack he could
notto´day。
Several times after this David's Lady of the Roses and Mr。 Jack
happened to call at the same hour察but never could David persuade these
two friends of his to stay together。 Always察if one came and the other was
there察 the other went away察 in spite of David's protestations that two
people did not tire him at all and his assertions that he often entertained as
many as that at once。 Tractable as they were in all other ways察anxious as
they seemed to please him察 on this one point they were obdurate此 never
would they stay together。
They were not angry with each otherDavid was sure of that察for they
were always very especially polite察and rose察and stood察and bowed in a
most delightful fashion。 Still察he sometimes thought that they did not quite
like each other察for always察after the one went away察the other察left behind察
was silent and almost sternif it was Mr。 Jack察 and flushed´faced and
nervousif it was Miss Holbrook。 But why this was so David could not
understand。
The span of handsome black horses came very frequently to the Holly
farmhouse now察and as time passed they often bore away behind them a
white´faced but happy´eyed boy on the seat beside Miss Holbrook。
;My察but I don't see how every one can be so good to me ─exclaimed
the boy察one day察to his Lady of the Roses。
;Oh察that's easy察David察─she smiled。 ;The only trouble is to find out
what you wantyou ask for so little。;
;But I don't need to askyou do it all beforehand察─asserted the察boy。
;you and Mr。 Jack察and everybody。;
;Really拭That's good。; For a brief moment Miss Holbrook hesitated察
then察as if casually察she asked此 And he tells you stories察too察I suppose察
this Mr。 Jackjust as he used to察doesn't he拭─
;Well察he never did tell me but one察you know察before察but he's told me
more now察since I've been sick。;
165

JUST DAVID
;Oh察yes察I remember察and that one was 'The Princess and the Pauper'
wasn't it拭Well察has he told you any morelikethat拭─
The boy shook his head with decision。
;No察he doesn't tell me any more like that察andand I don't want him
to察either。;
Miss Holbrook laughed a little oddly。
;Why察David察what is the matter with that拭─she queried。
;The ending察it wasn't nice察you know。;
;Oh察yes察II remember。;
;I've asked him to change it察─ went on David察in a grieved voice。 ;I
asked him just the other day察but he wouldn't。;
;Perhaps hehe didn't want to。; Miss Holbrook spoke very quickly察
but so low that David barely heard the words。
;Didn't want to拭Oh察yes察he did He looked awful sober察and as if he
really cared察you know。 And he said he'd give all he had in the world if he
really could change it察but he couldn't。;
;Did he sayjust that拭─ Miss Holbrook was leaning forward a little
breathlessly now。
;Yesjust that察and that's the part I couldn't understand察─commented
David。 ;For I don't see why a storyjust a story made up out of
somebody's headcan't be changed any way you want it。 And I told him
so。;
;Well察and what did he say to that拭─
;He didn't say anything for a minute察and I had to ask him again。 Then
he sat up suddenly察 just as if he'd been asleep察 you know察 and said察 'Eh察
what察David' And then I told him again what I'd said。 This time he shook
his head察and smiled that kind of a smile that isn't really a smile察you know察
and said something about a real察true´to´life story's never having but one
ending察and that was a logical ending。 Lady of the Roses察what is a logical
ending拭─
The Lady of the Roses laughed unexpectedly。 The two little red spots察
that David always loved to see察 flamed into her cheeks察 and her eyes

showed a sudden sparkle。 When she answered察 her words came
disconnectedly察with little laughing breaths between。
;Well察David察II'm not sure I cantell you。 But perhaps Ican find
out。 This much察however察I am sure of此Mr。 Jack's logical ending wouldn't
bemine ─
What she meant David did not know察nor would she tell him when he
asked察but a few days later she sent for him察and very gladly Davidable
now to go where he pleasedobeyed the summons。
It was November察and the garden was bleak and cold察but in the library
a bright fire danced on the hearth察and before this Miss Holbrook drew up
two low chairs。
She looked particularly pretty察David thought。 The rich red of her dress
had apparently brought out an answering red in her cheeks。 Her eyes were
very bright and her lips smiled察yet she seemed oddly nervous and restless。
She sewed a little察with a bit of yellow silk on whitebut not for long。 She
knitted with two long ivory needles flashing in and out of a silky mesh of
bluebut this察too察she soon ceased doing。 On a low stand at David's side
she had placed books and pictures察and for a time she talked of those。 Then
very abruptly she asked此
;David察when will you seeMr。 Jack againdo you suppose拭─
;Tomorrow。 I'm going up to the House that Jack Built to tea察and I'm to
stay all night。 It's Halloweenthat is察it isn't really Halloween察because it's
too late。 I lost that察being sick察you know。 So we're going to pretend察and
Mr。 Jack is going to show me what it is like。 That is what Mr。 Jack and Jill
always do察when something ails the real thing察they just pretend with the
make´believe one。 He's planned lots of things for Jill and me to do察with
nuts and apples and candles察 you know。 It's to´morrow night。 so I'll see
him then。;
;To´morrow拭 Soso soon拭─ faltered Miss
