;One thousand and sixty dollars ─he gasped。 Then察to David此 Boy察in
Heaven's name察who are you拭─
;I don't knowonly David。; The boy spoke wearily察with a grieved sob
in his voice。 He was very tired察a good deal perplexed察and a little angry。

He wished察if no one wanted this gold察that he could take it upstairs again
to the chimney cupboard察or察if they objected to that察that they would at
least give it to him察and let him go away now to that beautiful music he
was to hear察and to those kind people who were always to understand what
he said when he played。
;Of course察─ ventured Perry Larson diffidently察 I ain't professin' ter
know any great shakes about the hand of the Lord察 Mr。 Holly察 but it do
strike me that this 'ere gold comes mighty near bein' proverdentialfur
you。;
Simeon Holly fell back in his seat。 His eyes clung to the gold察but his
lips set into rigid lines。
;That money is the boy's察Larson。 It isn't mine察─he said。
;He's give it to ye。;
Simeon Holly shook his head。
;David is nothing but a child察Perry。 He doesn't realize at all what he is
doing察nor how valuable his gift is。;
;I know察 sir察 but you DID take him in察 when there wouldn't nobody
else do it察─argued Larson。 ;An'察anyhow察couldn't you make a kind of an I
O U of it察even if he is a kid拭Then察some day you could pay him back。
Meanwhile you'd be a´keepin' him察 an' a´schoolin' him察 an' that's
somethin'。;
;I know察I know察─nodded Simeon Holly thoughtfully察his eyes going
from the gold to David's face。 Then察aloud察yet as if to himself察he breathed此
;Boy察boy察who was your father拭How came he by all that goldand hea
tramp ─
David drew himself suddenly erect。 His eyes flashed。
;I don't know察sir。 But I do know this此he didn't STEAL it ─
Across the table Mrs。 Holly drew a quick breath察 but she did not
speaksave with her pleading eyes。 Mrs。 Holly seldom spokesave with
her eyeswhen her husband was solving a knotty problem。 She was
dumfounded now that he should listen so patiently to the man察Larson察
though she was not more surprised than was Larson himself。 For both of

them察however察there came at this moment a still greater surprise。 Simeon
Holly leaned forward suddenly察 the stern lines quite gone from his lips察
and his face working with emotion as he drew David toward him。
;You're a good son察boya good loyal son察andand I wish you were
mine I believe you。 He didn't steal it察and I won't steal it察either。 But I will
use it察since you are so good as to offer it。 But it shall be a loan察David察
and some day察God helping me察you shall have it back。 Meanwhile察you're
my boy察Davidmy boy ─
;Oh察 thank you察 sir察─ rejoiced David。 ;And察 really察 you know察 being
wanted like that is better than the start would be察isn't it拭─
;Better thanwhat拭─
David shifted his position。 He had not meant to say just that。
;Nnothing察─ he stammered察 looking about for a means of quick
escape。 ;II was just talking察─ he finished。 And he was immeasurably
relieved to find that Mr。 Holly did not press the matter further。

CHAPTER XIX
THE UNBEAUTIFUL WORLD
In spite of the exaltation of renunciation察and in spite of the joy of
being newly and especially ;wanted察─ those early September days were
sometimes hard for David。 Not until he had relinquished all hope of his
;start; did he fully realize what that hope had meant to him。
There were times察 to be sure察 when there was nothing but rejoicing
within him that he was able thus to aid the Hollys。 There were other times
when there was nothing but the sore heartache because of the great work
out in the beautiful world that could now never be done察and because of
the unlovely work at hand that must be done。 To tell the truth察 indeed察
David's entire conception of life had become suddenly a chaos of puzzling
contradictions。
To Mr。 Jack察 one day察 David went with his perplexities。 Not that he
told him of the gold´pieces and of the unexpected use to which they had
been putindeed察no。 David had made up his mind never察if he could help
himself察 to mention those gold´pieces to any one who did not already
know of them。 They meant questions察and the questions察explanations。 And
he had had enough of both on that particular subject。 But to Mr。 Jack he
said one day察when they were alone together此
;Mr。 Jack察how many folks have you got inside of your head拭─
;Ehwhat察David拭─
David repeated his question and attached an explanation。
;I mean察the folks thatthat make you do things。;
Mr。 Jack laughed。
;Well察─he said察 I believe some people make claims to quite a number察
and perhaps almost every one owns to a Dr。 Jekyll and a Mr。 Hyde。;
136

;Who are they拭─
;Never mind察David。 I don't think you know the gentlemen察anyhow。
They're only something like the little girl with a curl。 One is very察 very
good察indeed察and the other is horrid。;
;Oh察 yes察 I know them察 they're the ones that come to me察─ returned
David察with a sigh。 ;I've had them a lot察lately。;
Mr。 Jack stared。
;Oh察have you拭─
;Yes察and that's what's the trouble。 How can you drive them offthe
one that is bad察I mean拭─
;Well察really察─confessed Mr。 Jack察 I'm not sure I can tell。 You seethe
gentlemen visit me sometimes。;
;Oh察do they拭─
;Yes。;
;I'm so gladthat is察I mean察─amended David察in answer to Mr。 Jack's
uplifted eyebrows察 I'm glad that you understand what I'm talking about。
You see察I tried Perry Larson last night on it察to get him to tell me what to
do。 But he only stared and laughed。 He didn't know the names of 'em察
anyhow察as you do察and at last he got really almost angry and said I made
him feel so 'buggy' and 'creepy' that he wouldn't dare look at himself in the
glass if I kept on察for fear some one he'd never known was there should
jump out at him。;
Mr。 Jack chuckled。
;Well察I suspect察David察that Perry knew one of your gentlemen by the
name of 'conscience' perhaps察 and I also suspect that maybe conscience
does pretty nearly fill the bill察and that you've been having a bout with that。
Eh拭Now察what is the trouble拭Tell me about it。;
David stirred uneasily。 Instead of answering察 he asked another
question。
;Mr。 Jack察it is a beautiful world察isn't it拭─
For a moment there was no察answer察then a low voice replied此
;Your father said it was察David。;
137

Again David moved restlessly。
;Yes察 but father was on the mountain。 And down herewell察 down
here there are lots of things that I don't believe he knew about。;
;What察for instance拭─
;Why察lots of thingstoo many to tell。 Of course there are things like
catching fish察and killing birds and squirrels and other things to eat察and
plaguing cats and dogs。 Father never would have called those beautiful。
Then there are others like little Jimmy Clark who can't walk察and the man
at the Marstons' who's sick察and Joe Glaspell who is blind。 Then there are
still different ones like Mr。 Holly's little boy。 Perry says he ran away years
and years ago察 and made his people very unhappy。 Father wouldn't call
that a beautiful world察 would he拭And how can people like that always
play in tune拭 And there are the Princess and the Pauper that you told
about。;
;Oh察the story拭─
;Yes察 and people like them can't be happy and think the world is
beautiful察of course。;
;Why not拭─
;Because they didn't end right。 They didn't get married and live happy
