fairyland of beauty。 She spent money like water。 All manner of artists察
from the man who painted her ceilings to the man who planted her seeds察
came and bowed to her will。 From the four corners of the earth she
brought her treasures and lavished them through the house and grounds。
Then察 every summer察 she came herself察 and lived among them察 a very
Princess indeed。;
;And the boywhat became of the boy拭─demanded David。 ;Didn't he
see herever拭─
Mr。 Jack shook his head。
;Not often察David察and when he did察it did not make him anyhappier。
You see察the boy had become the Pauper察you must n't forget that。;
;But he wasn't a Pauper when you left him last。; ;Wasn't he拭Well察
then察I'll tell you about that。 You see察the boy察even though he did go away察
soon found out that in his heart the Princess was still the girl察just the same。
He loved her察and he wanted her to be his wife察so for a littlefor a very
littlehe was wild enough to think that he might work and study and do
great things in the world until he was even a Prince himself察and then he
could marry the Princess。;
;Well察couldn't he拭 ─
;No。 To begin with察 he lost his health。 Then察 away back in the little

house on the hill something happeneda something that left a very
precious charge for him to keep察and he had to go back and keep it察and to
try to see if he couldn't find that lost health察as well。 And that is all。;
;All You don't mean that that is the end ─exclaimed Jill。
;That's the end。;
;But that isn't a mite of a nice end察─complained David。 ;They always
get married and live happy ever afterin stories。;
;Do they拭─Mr。 Jack smiled a little sadly。 ;Perhaps they do察Davidin
stories。;
;Well察can't they in this one拭─
;I don't see how。;
;Why can't he go to her and ask her to marry him拭─
Mr。 Jack drew himself up proudly。
;The Pauper and the Princess拭Never Paupers don't go to Princesses察
David察and say察'I love you。';
David frowned。
;Why not拭I don't see whyif they want to do it。 Seems as if somehow
it might be fixed。;
;It can't be察─returned Mr。 Jack察his gaze on the towers that crowned
the opposite hill察 not so long as always before the Pauper's eyes there are
those gray walls behind which he pictures the Princess in the midst of her
golden luxury。;
To neither David nor Jill did the change to the present tense seem
strange。 The story was much too real to them for that。
;Well察anyhow察I think it ought to be fixed察─declared David察as he rose
to his feet。
;So do Ibut we can't fix it察─laughed Jill。 ;And I'm hungry。 Let's see
what there is to eat ─

CHAPTER XVIII
DAVID TO THE RESCUE
It was a beautiful moonlight night察 but for once David was not
thinking of the moon。 All the way to the Holly farmhouse he was thinking
of Mr。 Jack's story察 The Princess and the Pauper。; It held him strangely。
He felt that he never could forget it。 For some reason that he could not
have explained察 it made him sad察 too察 and his step was very quiet as he
went up the walk toward the kitchen door。
It was after eight o'clock。 David had taken supper with Mr。 Jack and
Jill察and not for some hours had he been at the farmhouse。 In the doorway
now he stopped short察then instinctively he stepped back into the shadow。
In the kitchen a kerosene light was burning。 It showed Mrs。Holly crying at
the table察and Mr。 Holly察white´faced and stern´lipped察staring at nothing。
Then Mrs。 Holly raised her face察 drawn and tear´stained察 and asked a
trembling question。
;Simeon察have you thought拭We might goto Johnforhelp。;
David was frightened then察 so angry was the look that came into
Simeon Holly's face。
;Ellen察we'll have no more of this察─said the man harshly。 ;Understand察
I'd rather lose the whole thing andand starve察than go toJohn。;
David fled then。 Up the back stairs he crept to his room and left his
violin。 A moment later he stole down again and sought Perry Larson
whom he had seen smoking in the barn doorway。
;Perry察 what is it拭─ he asked in a trembling voice。 ;What has
happenedin there拭─He pointed toward the house。
The man puffed for a moment in silence before he took his pipe from
his mouth。

;Well察 sonny察 I s'pose I may as well tell ye。 You'll have ter know it
sometime察seein' as 't won't be no secret long。 They've had a stroke o' bad
luckMr。 an' Mis' Holly has。;
;What is it拭─
The man hitched in his seat。
;By sugar察 boy察 I s'pose if I tell ye察 there ain't no sartinty that you'll
sense it at all。 I reckon it ain't in your class。;
;But what is it拭─
;Well察 it's moneyand one might as well talk moonshine to you as
money察 I s'pose察 but here goes it。 It's a thousand dollars察 boy察 that they
owed。 Here察like this察─he explained察rummaging his pockets until he had
found a silver dollar to lay on his open palm。 ;Now察 jest imagine a
thousand of them察that's heaps an' heapsmore 'n I ever see in my life。;
;Like the stars拭─guessed David。
The man nodded。
;Ex´ACTLY Well察they owed thisMr。 an' Mis' Holly didand they
had agreed ter pay it next Sat'day。 And they was all right察too。 They had it
plum saved in the bank察an' was goin' ter draw it Thursday察ter make sure。
An' they was feelin' mighty pert over it察too察when ter´day along comes the
news that somethin's broke kersmash in that bank察an' they've shet it up。
An' nary a cent can the Hollys git nowan' maybe never。 Anyhow察 not
'fore it's too late for this job。;
;But won't he waitthat man they owe it to拭I should think he'd have
to察if they didn't have it to pay。;
;Not much he will察when it's old Streeter that's got the mortgage on a
good fat farm like this ─
David drew his brows together perplexedly。
;What is aa mortgage拭─he asked。 ;Is it anything like a porte´cochere拭
I KNOW what that is察 'cause my Lady of the Roses has one察 but we
haven't got thatdown here。;
Perry Larson sighed in exasperation。
;Gosh察if that ain't 'bout what I expected of ye No察it ain't even second

cousin to aa´that thing you're a´talkin' of。 In plain wordin'察it's jest this此
Mr。 Holly察he says ter Streeter此'You give me a thousand dollars and I'll pay
ye back on a sartin day察if I don't pay察you can sell my farm fur what it'll
bring察an' TAKE yer pay。 Well察now here 't is。 Mr。 Holly can't pay察an' so
Streeter will put up the farm fur sale。;
;What察with Mr。 and Mrs。 Holly LIVING here拭─
;Sure Only they'll have ter git out察ye know。;
;Where'll they go拭─
;The Lord knows察I don't。;
;And is THAT what they're crying forin therebecause they've got
to go拭─
;Sure ─
;But isn't there anything察anywhere察that can be done tostop it拭─
;I don't see how察kidnot unless some one ponies up with the money
'fore next Sat'dayan' a thousand o' them things don't grow on ev'ry
bush察─he finished察gently patting the coin in his hand。
At the words a swift change came to David's face。 His cheeks paled
and his eyes dilated in terror。 It was as if ahead of him he saw a yawning
abyss察eager to engulf him。
;And you sayMONEY wouldfix it拭─he asked thickly。
;Ex´ACT´lya thousand o' them察though察't would take。;
A dawning relief came into David's eyesit was as if he saw a bridge
across the abyss。
;You meanthat there wouldn't ANYTHING do察 only silver pieces
like those拭─he questioned hopefully。
;Sugar察kid察'course there would Gosh察but you BE a checkerboard o'
sense an' nonsense察 an' no mistake Any money would do the jobany
money Don't ye see拭Anything that's money。;
;Would g´gold do it拭─David's voice was very faint now。
;Suregold察 or silver察
