and an expressive glance。 ;But whether it does or does n't won't make any
difference in my going to walk察I guess。;
;Oh察won't it拭─beamed David察his face changing。 ;I'm so glad I don't
mind the rain察either。 Father and I used to go in the rain lots of times察only察
of course察we couldn't take our violins then察so we used to like the pleasant
days better。 But there are some things you find on rainy days that you
couldn't find any other time察aren't there拭The dance of the drops on the
leaves察and the rush of the rain when the wind gets behind it。 Don't you
love to feel it察 out in the open spaces察 where the wind just gets a good
chance to push拭─
Mrs。 Holly stared。 Then she shivered and threw up her hands with a
gesture of hopeless abandonment。
;Land's sake察 boy ─ she ejaculated feebly察 as she turned back to her
work。
From dishes to sweeping察and from sweeping to dusting察hurried Mrs。
Holly察going at last into the somber parlor察always carefully guarded from
sun and air。 Watching her察mutely察David trailed behind察his eyes staring a
little as they fell upon the multitude of objects that parlor contained此the
haircloth chairs察 the long sofa察 the marble´topped table察 the curtains察
cushions察spreads察and ;throws察─the innumerable mats and tidies察the hair´
wreath察 the wax flowers under their glass dome察 the dried grasses察 the
marvelous bouquets of scarlet察green察and purple everlastings察the stones
and shells and many´sized察 many´shaped vases arranged as if in line of
battle along the corner shelves。
;Yyes察 you may come in察─ called Mrs。 Holly察 glancing back at the

hesitating boy in the doorway。 ;But you mustn't touch anything。 I'm going
to dust。;
;But I haven't seen this room before察─ruminated David。
;Well察no察─deigned Mrs。 Holly察with just a touch of superiority。 ;We
don't use this room common察little boy察nor the bedroom there察either。 This
is the company room察 for ministers and funerals察 and; She stopped
hastily察 with a quick look at David察 but the boy did not seem to have
heard。
;And doesn't anybody live here in this house察 but just you and Mr。
Holly察and Mr。 Perry Larson拭─he asked察still looking wonderingly about
him。
;No察notnow。; Mrs。 Holly drew in her breath with a little catch察and
glanced at the framed portrait of a little boy on the wall。
;But you've got such a lot of rooms andand things察─remarked David。
;Why察daddy and I only had two rooms察and not hardly any THINGS。 It
was sodifferent察you know察in my home。;
;I should say it might have been ─Mrs。 Holly began to dust hurriedly察
but carefully。 Her voice still carried its hint of superiority。
;Oh察yes察─smiled David。 ;But you say you don't use this room much察
so that helps。;
;Helps ─In her stupefaction Mrs。 Holly stopped her work and stared。
;Why察 yes。 I mean察 you've got so many other rooms you can live in
those。 You don't HAVE to live in here。;
; 'Have to live in here' ─ ejaculated the woman察 still too
uncomprehending to be anything but amazed。
;Yes。 But do you have to KEEP all these things察and clean them and
clean them察like this察every day拭Couldn't you give them to somebody察or
throw them away拭─
;Throwthesethingsaway ─ With a wild sweep of her arms察 the
horrified woman seemed to be trying to encompass in a protective
embrace each last endangered treasure of mat and tidy。 ;Boy察 are you
crazy拭These things areare valuable。 They cost money察and time andand

labor。 Don't you know beautiful things when you see them拭─
;Oh察 yes察 I love BEAUTIFUL things察─ smiled David察 with
unconsciously rude emphasis。 ;And up on the mountain I had them always。
There was the sunrise察and the sunset察and the moon and the stars察and my
Silver Lake察and the cloud´boats that sailed;
But Mrs。 Holly察with a vexed gesture察stopped him。
;Never mind察little boy。 I might have knownbrought up as you have
been。 Of course you could not appreciate such things as these。 Throw them
away察indeed ─And she fell to work again察but this time her fingers carried
a something in their touch that was almost like the caress a mother might
bestow upon an aggrieved child。
David察 vaguely disturbed and uncomfortable察 watched her with
troubled eyes察then察apologetically察he explained此
;It was only that I thought if you didn't have to clean so many of these
things察 you could maybe go to walk moreto´day察 and other days察 you
know。 You saidyou didn't have time察─he reminded her。
But Mrs。 Holly only shook her head and sighed此
;Well察well察never mind察little boy。 I dare say you meant all right。 You
couldn't understand察of course。;
And David察 after another moment's wistful eyeing of the caressing
fingers察turned about and wandered out onto the side porch。 A minute later察
having seated himself on the porch steps察 he had taken from his pocket
two small pieces of folded paper。 And then察through tear´dimmed eyes察he
read once more his father's letter。
;He said I mustn't grieve察for that would grieve him察─ murmured the
boy察after a time察his eyes on the far´away hills。 ;And he said if I'd play察
my mountains would come to me here察and I'd really be at home up there。
He said in my violin were all those things I'm wantingso bad ─
With a little choking breath察 David tucked the note back into his
pocket and reached for his violin。
Some time later察Mrs。 Holly察dusting the chairs in the parlor察stopped
her work察tiptoed to the door察and listened breathlessly。 When she turned

back察still later察to her work察her eyes were wet。
;I wonder why察when he plays察I always get to thinking ofJohn察─she
sighed to herself察as she picked up her dusting´cloth。
After supper that night察 Simeon Holly and his wife again sat on the
kitchen porch察resting from the labor of the day。 Simeon's eyes were closed。
His wife's were on the dim outlines of the shed察the barn察the road察or a
passing horse and wagon。 David察 sitting on the steps察 was watching the
moon climb higher and higher above the tree´tops。 After a time he slipped
into the house and came out with his violin。
At the first long´drawn note of sweetness察 Simeon Holly opened his
eyes and sat up察stern´lipped。 But his wife laid a timid hand on his arm。
;Don't say anything察please察─she entreated softly。 ;Let him play察just
for to´night。 He's lonesomepoor little fellow。; And Simeon Holly察with a
frowning shrug of his shoulders察sat back in his chair。
Later察 it was Mrs。 Holly herself who stopped the music by saying此
;Come察David察it's bedtime for little boys。 I'll go upstairs with you。; And
she led the way into the house and lighted the candle for him。
Upstairs察in the little room over the kitchen察David found himself once
more alone。 As before察the little yellow´white nightshirt lay over the chair´
back察and as before察Mrs。 Holly had brushed away a tear as she had placed
it there。 As before察too察the big four´posted bed loomed tall and formidable
in the corner。 But this time the coverlet and sheet were turned back
invitinglyMrs。 Holly had been much disturbed to find that David had
slept on the floor the night before。
Once more察 with his back carefully turned toward the impaled bugs
and moths on the wall察David undressed himself。 Then察before blowing out
the candle察 he went to the window kneeled down察 and looked up at the
moon through the trees。
David was sorely puzzled。 He was beginning to wonder just what was
to become of himself。
His father had said that out in the world there was a beautiful work for
him to do察but what was it拭How was he to find it拭Or how was he to do it
