A breath stirs the dark abysses。 。 。 。 The deeps below the deep Are
troubled and vexed 。 。 。 and a thousand worlds Fall on eternal sleep
THE COMRADE
I
HATH not man at his noblest An air of something more than man拭A
hint of grace immortal察 Born of his greatly daring to assist the gods In
conquering these shaggy wastes察 These desert worlds察And planting life
and order in these stars拭So Woman at her best此Her eyes are bright with
visions and with dreams That triumph over time察 Her plumed thought察
wing for wing察is mate with his。
II
The world rolls on from dream to dream察 And 'neath the vast
impersonal revenges of its going察
Crushed fools that cried defeat Lie dead amid the dust they
prophesied Ye doubters of man's larger destiny察 Ye that despair察 Look
backward down the vistaed years察And all is battleand all victory Man
fought察 to be a man Through painful centuries the slow beast fought察
Blinded and baffled察 fought to gain his soul察 Wild察 hairy察 shag察 and
feared of shadows察 Yet the clouds Made him strange signals that he
puzzled o'er察Beast察child察and ape察And yet the winds harped to him察and
the sea Rolled in upon his consciousness Its tides of wonder and romance察
´ Uncouth and caked with mire察And yet the stars said something to him察
and the sun Declared itself a god察The lagging cycles turned at last
The pictures into thought察Thought flowered in soul察But察oh察the myriad
weary years Ere Caliban was Shakespeare's self And Darwin's ape had
Darwin's brain The battling察battling察and the steep ascent察The fight to
hold the little gained察The loss察the doubt察the shaken heart察The stubborn察
groping slow recovery But looking backward toward the dim
beginnings察You that despair察Hath he not climbed and conquered拭Look
backward and all's Victory What coward looks forward and foresees

defeat拭
III
Who climbed beside him察and who fought And suffered and was glad拭
Is she a lesser thing than he察Who stained the slopes with bloody feet察or
stood Beside him on some hard´won eminence of hope Exulting as the
bold dawn swept A harper hand along the ringing hills拭Flesh of his flesh察
and of his soul the soul察Hath she not fought察hath she not climbed拭
And how is she a lesser thing拭Nay察if she ever was 'Twas we that
made her so察who called her queen But kept her slave。
IV
Had she not courage for the fight拭Hath she not courage for the years
to come拭Hath she not courage who descends alone How pitifully alone察
except for Love。 Where man's thought even falters that would
follow察 Into the shadowy abyss Through vast and murmurous caverns
dark with crowding dread And terrible with hovering wings察 To
battle there with Deathto battle There with Death察and wrest from him察
O Conqueror and Mother察Life
V
Hath she too long dwelt dream´bound in the world of love察
Unconscious of the sterner throes察The more austere察impersonal察wide
faith察 The urge that drives Christs to the cross Not for the love of one
beloved察But for the love of all拭If so察she wakes Wakes and demands a
share in all man's bolder destinies察The high察audacious ventures of
the soul That thinks to scale the bastioned slopes And strike stark Chaos
from his throne。 We still stand in the dawn of time。 Not meanly let us
stand nor shaken with low doubts For there beyond the verge and
margin of gray cloud The future thrills with promise And the skies are
tremulous with golden light察 She too would share those victories察
Comrade察 and more than comrade察 New times察 new needs confront us
now察We must evolve new powers To battle with察We must go forward
now together察Or perchance we fail

DREAMS & DUST
A LITTLE WHILE
A little while the tears and laughter察The willow and the rose A
little while察and what comes after No man knows。
An hour to sing察to love and linger 。 。 。 Then lutanist and lute Will
fall on silence察song and singer Both be mute。
Our gods from our desires we fashion。 。 。 。 Exalt our baffled lives察
And dream their vital bloom and passion Still survives察
But when we're done with mirth and weeping察 With myrtle察rue察and
rose察Shall Death take Life into his keeping拭 。 。 No man knows。
What heart hath not察 through twilight places察 Sought for its dead
again To gild with love their pallid faces拭 。 。 Sought in vain 。 。
Still mounts the Dream on shining pinion 。 。 。 Still broods the dull
distrust 。 。 。 Which shall have ultimate dominion察 Dream察or dust拭
A little while with grief and laughter察 And then the day will close察
The shadows gather 。 。 。 what comes after No man knows
